Mary

There is no figure in Christian history that is more misunderstood than Mary.  The biggest misconception is that she is worshiped by Catholic and Orthodox Christians and even by some early reformed Protestant Christians like traditional Anglicans and Lutherans.  This may shock you, but see how some of the early Protestant Reformers of the 1500s viewed Mary.  I verified that this meme is historically-correct.

Let's take a look at the video that gave me the spark to understand Mary Biblically through Jewish-Christian eyes.  If you don't watch any other video about Mary, PLEASE watch this one.

I wanted to understand who Mary was.  This video clip gives the Old and New Testament covenentual parallels that finaly helped me understand who Mary properly seen by the Early Christians, the New Ark of the Convenanet and the New Eve.

All four of the ancient Christian Marian doctrines are: 1. She is the Mother of God, 2. She was a perpetual virgin, 3. She was immaculately conceived, and 4. She was assumed into Heaven.  Not only did the Early Church Fathers believe in these doctrines, Protestant Reformers Martin Luther, John Calvin, and Ulrich Zwingli believed in some to all of the Marian doctrines.

Catechism of the Catholic Church

970 "Mary's function as mother of men in no way obscures or diminishes this unique mediation of Christ, but rather shows its power. But the Blessed Virgin's salutary influence on men . . . flows forth from the superabundance of the merits of Christ, rests on his mediation, depends entirely on it, and draws all its power from it."513 "No creature could ever be counted along with the Incarnate Word and Redeemer; but just as the priesthood of Christ is shared in various ways both by his ministers and the faithful, and as the one goodness of God is radiated in different ways among his creatures, so also the unique mediation of the Redeemer does not exclude but rather gives rise to a manifold cooperation which is but a sharing in this one source."514

--------Quotes from the Church Fathers and Protestant Reformers about Mary.-------
Protestant Reformers Martin Luther, John Calvin, and Ulrich Zwignli quotes are below the Church Fathers.

I have always wanted to understand the reason why Mary is so important to Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, Coptic Christians, and some Anglicans  along with Christians that existed before the Protestant Reformation, and especially those Christians closest to Christ and the Apostles. After speaking with so many of these Christians, including priests, they all confirmed that they believed in one Trinitarian God yet Mary is highly esteemed. So why was Mary so important to early Christians and to unreformed Christians still today?

If you think of the Ark of the Covenant in the Old Testament (Exodus 25), God Himself gave very specific instructions on how to build the Ark and what to put in it just as He did Noah's Ark. Next to the Scriptures, The Ark of the Covenant was the most highly esteemed artifact for Jewish people, not worshiped, but esteemed because of God's presence INSIDE of it. The Ark was used for ceremonial practices in the ATONEMENT OF SINS. In ancient Judaism, the high priest on "Yom Kippur," the Jewish Day of Atonement, went into the Holy of Holies where the Ark was. On this day, the high priest would enter this sacred area with the blood of a sacrificed lamb. The high priest would sprinkle the blood of the sacrificed lamb on the Mercy Seat. Once received by God, the blood of the lamb atoned (covered) for the sins of the high priest and the entire nation of Israel. This ritual was performed continuously, year after year. The Ark of the Covenant played a key role in the forgiveness of sins for the Jewish people. The Ark contained the Ten Commandments, the rod of Aaron, and manna from heaven. God's presence was so strong inside and around the Ark that the high priest had a rope tied around his ankle on Yom Kipper just in case he had to be pulled out of the Holy of Holies.

The earliest Jewish-convert Christians believed the same to be true about Mary. She herself wasn't a God; she was seen as the Ark of the New Covenant, the vessel of the Atonement, Jesus Christ. The OT Ark of the Covenant contained the Word in tablet form (Ten Commandments). Mary contained the Word made Flesh (Jesus, John 1:14). The Ark contained manna from heaven. Mary contained the Bread of Life (Jesus, John 6:36). In relation to Eve, Eve brought death into the world by bringing in original sin. Mary brought life into the world by giving birth to our Savior. It is what Mary CONTAINED inside of her, not she herself. It was ALL about Christ and what He gave for us. Mary just happened to say "yes" to bearing the Savior of the world as a beloved vessel through the direct line of David who carried our Atonement just as the Ark was the beloved vessel of Atonement for the Jewish people. This is why Mary is honored. Still, there is an enormous chasm between honoring Mary and worshiping Jesus, at least there should be, but this is why Mary is special and a beautiful example to Christian women. Look at Mary through the eyes of the Jewish people. In historical context, the early Christians saw Mary as the New Ark of the Covenant and the New Eve. This is why you see statues of Mary standing on a snake near Roman Catholic Churches because Eve was tempted by the serpent. Yet Mary did the opposite by defeating the serpent.   Eve brought the death of sin into the world.  Mary brought forth life by bringing our Savior into the world.

Luke 1:26-38  (ESV)

Birth of Jesus Foretold 26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed[a] to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin's name was Mary.28 And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!”[b] 29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. 30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

34 And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”[c]
35 And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born[d] will be called holy—the Son of God. 36 And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. 37 For nothing will be impossible with God.” 38 And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant[e] of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

Mary Visits Elizabeth

39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, 40 and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, 42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 And why is this granted to me that the MOTHER OF MY LORD should come to me? 44 For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be[f] a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.”
Jesus was alone with his parents when he went to the temple.

Luke 2:41-51

The Boy Jesus in the Temple

41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. 42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to custom. 43 And when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, 44 but supposing him to be in the group they went a day's journey, but then they began to search for him among their relatives and acquaintances,45 and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching for him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.48 And when his parents[a] saw him, they were astonished. And his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress.” 49 And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?”[b] 50 And they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them. 51 And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart.

Genesis 3:10-20  (ESV)
10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” 11 He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
14 The Lord God said to the serpent,
“Because you have done this,
    cursed are you above all livestock
    and above all beasts of the field;
on your belly you shall go,
    and dust you shall eat
    all the days of your life.
15 I will put enmity between you and the woman,
    and between your offspring[a] and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head,
    and you shall bruise his heel.”
16 To the woman he said,
“I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing;
    in pain you shall bring forth children.
Your desire shall be contrary to[b] your husband,
    but he shall rule over you.”
17 And to Adam he said,
“Because you have listened to the voice of your wife
    and have eaten of the tree
of which I commanded you,
    ‘You shall not eat of it,’
cursed is the ground because of you;
    in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life;
18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you;
    and you shall eat the plants of the field.
19 By the sweat of your face
    you shall eat bread,
till you return to the ground,
    for out of it you were taken;
for you are dust,
    and to dust you shall return.”
20 The man called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.[c]

The Perpetual Virginity of Mary

A Catholic Bible study from Dr. Brant Pitre about the "brothers" of Jesus
This topic is one of the most hotly contested in Protestantism because the Bible clearly says that Jesus had brothers.   The word brothers in ancient Judiasm and early Christianity meant "brethren."

Matthew 13:55-56: "Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brethren James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? And are not all of his sisters with us?"
Matthew 1:24-25: "And Joseph rising up from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him, and took unto him his wife. And he knew her not till she brought forth her firstborn.

From Catholic Answers, "Abraham and Lot are classic examples of “brother” being used for an extended relation (see Genesis 13:8 and 14:12). Though they were actually uncle and nephew, they called one another “brother.” Moreover, in the New Testament, Jesus told us to call one another “brothers” (see Matthew 23:8). Obviously, this doesn't infer that all Christians have the same physical mother.
Second, if we examine more closely the example of James, one of these four “brothers" of the Lord mentioned in Matthew 13:55, we discover him to actually be a cousin or some other variety of relative of Jesus rather than a blood brother."--Catholic Answers
James and Judas are also referred as Mary's sons.  The ancient belief was, Joseph had children from a previous marriage, and these brothers were Jesus' half brothers.  Also, because Mary had to be undefiled as the Ark of the Covenant was, her perpetual virginity was understood and accepted as Church Authority even into early Protestantism by the reformers mentioned above.
According to Catholic Answers, a greatly respected source for Catholic doctrine, here is a quote from the article
"The perpetual virginity of Mary has always been reconciled with the biblical

references to Christ’s brethren through a proper understanding of the meaning of

the term "brethren." The understanding that the brethren of the Lord were Jesus’

stepbrothers (children of Joseph) rather than half-brothers (children of Mary) was

the most common one until the time of Jerome (fourth century). It was Jerome

 who introduced the possibility that Christ’s brethren were actually his cousins,

since in Jewish idiom cousins were also referred to as "brethren." The Catholic

Church allows the faithful to hold either view, since both are compatible with the

reality of Mary’s perpetual virginity."
